The Duck

Happy days have finally arrived at our house!
Stella is big enough for...

'The Duck'

Back before Stella's arrival,
we had seen 'The Duck' on the shelves
and Jim & Cole knew that it was a must-have for our
new little Miss.
So it went onto our registry.
And we got it.
I think Jim & Cole were more excited about
'The Duck'
than they were about any other single item that we obtained for Stella.

Last week it was finally time.
Now that she's sitting on her own
we got 'The Duck' out and
gave it a try.

Looks like she's a natural.

She seemed to enjoy all that
'The Duck'
had to offer.

'The Duck'
makes bath time fun!

A Gentleman and a Scholar

There are natural events in a person's life that lead to reflection.
The end of the school year is always one of those reflection points for me.
This year in particular has led me to think back over
the past 8 years and how far my little guy has come.
It is Cole's last year in Middle School.
Next year he will move to the high school
and on to a new chapter.

Recently we were invited to an honor's breakfast at Cole's Middle School.
The post card that we received was pretty vague,
so we weren't sure what to expect.

Turns out that Cole, along with several of his other classmates was receiving a
President's Award for Academic Excellence
for maintaining a GPA of 3.5 or higher.

Pretty Cool!

Cole also got some other good news last week.
He had put in an application to be on the
Student Council at his new high school.
On Friday he got the Congrats letter.
So as he prepares to wrap up the Middle School
chapter in his life
and move on to bigger and better
he already has activities lined up.
I'm sure he will be a wonderful Student Council member.
Congrats Cole!

The Greeter

We have an official greeter in our house.

Stella can wave.
She does it at appropriate times.
Like when someone says
"Hi Stella"

or if someone says
"Goodbye"

Look at what I can do with my fingers Mom!

She also does it at
not so appropriate times
Like all of the rest of the time.

I want you to pay attention to me!

At first it was cute.

Well, it's still cute.
But, as Cole has noticed,
it gets old kind of fast.

Hi Daddy!

Because she doesn't stop waving
until you wave back at her.

Yep- I'm still waving at you!

And I'm still doing it.
Aren't I adorable!

Waving is kind of her thing.

The Story of Miles

Something happened yesterday that changed the dynamics of our household.
I've heard that this type of thing happens to people
and they are never the same.
Yesterday it happened to us.

It was 3:30 PM and
I was happily going about my day.
I had just pulled up to Cole's school to pick him up
I was on the phone with Jim
and I recall sharing with him that there was a car with
its hood up and there was a lady laying on the ground
looking under the car.
There were other people milling about as well
curiously looking on
at the lady on the ground.
Mr. C (a principal) and Candice (from the school office)
were both there.

The lady (a mom I'm assuming) was looking up under the car
as if she were trying to determine where a leak was coming from.
And then something weird happened.
Something black shot out from under the car.
It dashed across the street
into the lawn of the school
and toward the busy street.
And I knew-
it was a kitten.
I'm still on the phone with Jim
reporting to him what I'm seeing.
He wants off the phone
because I just know that the kitten is going to get hit.
So we hang up
and I watch as some kids manage to keep the kitten
from going into the street.
It doubles back
looking for a place to hide.
Ah yes, it finds one
under my car.

Mr. C comes over and calmly tells me that there is a cat
in my engine somewhere.
So I pop the hood.
We look and look
we don't hear or see it.
But we know it went in there.
We sit patiently waiting.
Animal control is called, and they come.
But they can't see it either.
We know it's not in any of the visible moving parts of the car
and I can't sit here all day.
I'm still sure it's in there.
But animal control thinks it must have come out.
Go ahead and go, he tells me.
So we go.
Cole and I head across town to get Stella
I watch my rear-view for a while
expecting to see something black come tubmling out at some point
but it doesn't.
So maybe animal control was right and somehow the kitten sneaked out
when no one was looking.

We get to daycare and turn into the parking lot
and I hear it.
Meowing!
Coming from somewhere under the car.
I go inside and Cole stands watch for the kitten.
Of course with the hood up, people ask if you need help.
And when you tell them there's a kitten somewhere in your engine
they can't help but to come and look.
So we wait while others try to coax the kitten out.
But it's not budging.
So I convince Cole that the best thing we can do is drive
the 80ish blocks back home slowly and get into the garage
where maybe the kitten will feel safe enough
at some point this evening to come out.
So again we go.
And again if we listen hard at the stoplights we hear
meowing.

We made it home and into the garage
and Cole quickly assembles several bowls of various
foods that kittens surely cannot resist.
And he waits.
Sitting patiently in the garage.
Eventually he comes inside and says that he's sure it has moved.
And he goes back out.
Only to come back in again and say that he can see it.
It's on the tire.
We grab a flashlight and sure enough
it's crouching on one of the rear tires.
And not interested in letting us grab it.
Jim finally grabs his manliest pair of gardening gloves
and tries to wrestle this furry, angry, cactus out of the wheel well.
No luck.
So we get a floor jack to lift the car off the wheel a little bit.
Ahhh, finally he can get a hold of it.
And finally, the kitten is free
and terrified.

So this is how our evening went.
At any given time, you can be assured that someone was out
in the garage checking on the kitten.
It ate the tuna
and the cat food
and the kitten chow
and it spilled the milk
and it drank some water
and it went potty in the litter tray that we put in there.
So we know it was hungry
and it appears healthy.

The kitten has a name now:
Miles
given that it rode approximately 11 miles under our car.

We're not really sure what we're going to do with it.
Jim was able to get it out of the kennel this morning
so we could clean up some spilled milk
and wipe the kennel up a little bit
and replace the food.
And based on what we were able to see (or not see as the case may be)
we think it's a female.
Miles was scared, but purring while Jim was holding her.
We are going to take Miles to the vet today
and maybe they can give us some guidance
on what to do next.

I don't know,
but it certainly changed the course of things
at least for last night.

Hey Miles!

Update:
Miles is a girl.
And she's about 6 weeks old.
She appears to be healthy
and just a bit wild.
But the vet was able to show us how to handle her
and so it appears that we have become foster humans
to an adorable kitten called Miles.

She Speaks!

Jim and I have been working hard trying to get Stella to say our name first.
Let's see who won....

Pretty sweet I'd say :)

and is doing so many new things
it's hard to keep up.

Happy Friday Friends!

Phone Photo Dump

It's a phone photo dump day.
Enjoy!

Awww, sweet napping photo.
She always looks so sweet when she sleeps,
and I am always compelled to take pictures of her,
but I'm afraid of waking her.
I guess on this day I wasn't worried about that.
She has taken to snuggling with a blankie when she sleeps.

Oh yeah! A cool van I saw in a parking lot last weekend.
It was painted all the way around with '60's bands.
I took the picture because I wanted to share with Cole.

Too tired for jumping apparently.

Not every little girl gets to enjoy gnawing on a dead rubber duckie during bath time.

We needed to try on Stella's swimming suit
before we took it to daycare.
Looks like she's ready for water days.

We had some storms here this past week.
I was trying to get to the grocery store
but it was pouring and hailing
but the rainbow was pretty.

We're still not fully mobile at our house.
Stella hasn't gotten up on hands and knees yet
but she sure does roll around the living room.
I left her on the blanket,
but she ended up under the coffee table.

The Outdoorsy Type

We are truly enjoying our new home.
The outdoor living is just awesome
and now that it has been nice we have not been spending much time indoors.
It's also a bonus that this lovely lady loves to be outside.

We have quickly learned that if she gets a little cranky
all we have to do is take her outside and she's instantly smiling.

We were outside last night during helmet-off hour
so Cole thought he'd let her give his helmet a shot.
No matter what helmet she's wearing, I think she's adorable!

*On a side note, check out the ridiculous armpit rolls on this girl*

A Happy Mother's Day

What a wonderful Mother's Day weekend we had.
This was one of the first weekends that we have been
able to spend working at our new house
and with the beautiful weather,
we took the opportunity to get some work done outside.

We planted and cleaned and clipped and mulched.

We even put in our very first family vegetable garden
with lots of peppers, tomatoes and herbs.
It doesn't look like much right now, but give it a few weeks.
That is, if the rabbits don't see it as a nice new buffet!

We also took some time to enjoy our beautiful new backyard.

Stella loves to be outside
and now that she can sit up on her own,
she can see the world from a whole new perspective.

Cole loves our new backyard too.
He's also seeing the world from a new perspective.

Look at this happy girl enjoying time outside!

Yes, she got to spent most of the afternoon breathing in the fresh air!

I hope that all of the Moms in our lives got to spend the day
doing exactly what they wanted to do.

Snaps From Last Night

With everything that we've had going on recently
we have not done a good job of grabbing the camera
and getting some snaps of our favorite girl.
So last night after her dinner
Jim gave her a Mum Mum and started snapping.
Here are some of my faves:

I should mention that we usually do her hour out of her helmet
during her dinner immediately followed by bath.
It seems like she would prefer to have the helmet off when she eats
and we avoid getting it coated in peas/sweet potatoes/applesauce
or whatever else she may be eating.

Stella had a full head of hair at birth
and then lost most of it on the sides.
She is currently sporting a faux hawk
but we leave it
because that one tuft of hair sticks out the top of the helmet.

Want some Mum Mum Daddy?

Whoa! Look at those cheeks

When she's excited, the feet go like crazy!

So So Silly

We're still working on proper cup usage

Almost got it...

Just a little more...

Whew!

Race Day!

Eleven weeks ago, Jim & Cole began their marathon training.
They worked so hard and put in some pretty grueling runs.
This past week has been especially tough for both of them.
Jim has had a bad head cold since last weekend,
and yesterday found out that he had gotten an ear infection.
Apparently sometime overnight his eardrum ruptured.
So needless to say, he was not feeling as well-prepared for today as he would have liked.
Cole has also been battling some congestion.

Our day started at 5 AM.
We needed to get an early start so that the guys could eat
well before start time.

Jim pinning on his number.

Cole was so excited.

Cole's race day game face.

Jim helped Cole get his number pinned on.

A little silliness at 5:30.

Do they look ready?
Jim's looking like he wants to go back to bed,
and Cole's looking like he's regretting shoving the whole banana in his mouth.

Stella was a great race-day partner for Mom.
She was not too sure what was going on,
but she didn't seem to mind the cold
and she seemed to enjoy watching the runners.
After a while she got into it and was even cheering them on.

We decided to sit at mile one and watch the runners come by
and then our plan was to walk to the stadium and watch them finish.

Here's Cole with Jim right behind him.

Jim's parents got in on the marathon-day action
and saw the guys at mile 5.
They decided to take a different approach to race watching
and would see the guys pass
and then get in the car and drive ahead to catch them at different spots along the course.
They saw them again at mile 6
and then between 9-10

Here are the guys between miles 9 & 10.

Stella and I waited in the stadium
getting updates from Grandpa & Grandma
and then finally, who do we see?
Here comes Cole (to the left of the flag)!

Closely followed by Jim
(below the right-hand side of the clock)
Of course he turned his head as soon as I snapped the picture.

The guys felt good about their race.
And Jim battled his illness and had a great race.

They posed for the obligatory picture
and then they were anxious to get home.

I guess they were tired.

Cole thought the medal was pretty cool
and he wore it most of the day.

The jury is still out on whether they'll be signing up next year.

Thanks everyone for all of your well-wishes and support.
Special thanks to John & Pat for the updates and for braving the chilly weather
to watch these guys run.
