Shots Stink!

Stella had her 2 month check-up today.

She got 2 shots in this leg

And one shot in this leg

She didn't like it!

She actually did pretty well. The worst part for her was the oral vaccination that the nurse tried to give her. Notice that I say "tried" to give her. Stella really wasn't having it and spit most of it out. What she didn't spit out, she vomited onto the nurse. I don't think the nurse was impressed.

Lucy and I made time for a snuggle nap with Stella when we got home. She was a little fussy, but mostly she was just sleepy.

She weighed in at 10 lbs 6 oz and she was 21 3/4 inches long.
She has gained almost 5 lbs since she was born, and has grown 3 inches!

2 Months Old!

Guess who is 2 months old today!

This chick!

We can't believe that 2 months have already passed since this little lady has come into the world. We feel so lucky every day (even on the cranky pants days) to have her in our lives!

Being a preemie is a funny thing. There is actual age, and then there is adjusted age. Obvioulsy her actual age is 2 months. However, her adjusted age is only 3 weeks. Doctors advise that we should only expect milestones of a 3 week old baby, and in some cases that is true, but in other cases Stella is right on track for a 2 month old. She should catch up by the time she's 18 months. I'm not sure I buy into the whole adjusted age thing. I mean- does that mean that the first 5 weeks didn't really happen? I don't think that's fair to parents, because we were definitely here for every stinky diaper and sleepless night! Actually, she was pretty easy for the first 5 weeks. She's a good eater and a great sleeper, so we really don't have any complaints.

We have noticed a lot more personality from Stella just in the last week. She is definitely tracking with her eyes and is looking at people when we talk to her. Of course the smiles are always nice, but we're noticing that they're only readily available first thing in the morning. It's a rare occasion at this point if we can get a smile out of her in the afternoon or evenings.

Tomorrow is Stella's 2 month check-up so I'll post an update on her stats- that is if Stella and Mommy survive the trauma of shots!

Family Dinner

This is what dinner looks like at our house when Stella is having a bad day.

Stella kind of woke up today with her cranky pants on.

She was really sweet in the morning, but then as the day wore on, she was having a hard time giving in to sleep and so continued to become crabbier and crabbier. By the time we got home from Cole's guitar lesson she was in full meltdown mode.

Jim tried to take care of things while I worked on dinner, but at one point I looked at the area where I was preparing dinner to find this menagerie of items, and an empty cooktop. A lesser (or smarter) person would have given in at this point and ordered pizza, but I kept moving forward and managed to make these Mushroom and Swiss Sliders from the The Pioneer Woman. I love her. She helped me get through the Stella crabby-pants evening.

First Smiles!

Stella smiled this weekend!

I mean she really smiled- on purpose! She did it more than once and has done it several times already today! The first time she smiled it was immediately followed by a pout and a little bit of crying. I think we startled her because we got so excited. Despite that, she still was willing to hand out more smiles as the weekend went on. She even gave her brother a big old toothless smile when he came home after being gone all weekend.

We are beginning to get glimpses of her developing personality and it is so exciting for us. It is just so fun to see her respond to us. The smiles are just in time for the holidays and Stella getting the opportunity to meet some of her aunts and uncles who she hasn't met yet.

Today I am finding myself having a lot of conversations with Stella that are basically me begging her to smile again. So- come on friends, give us a smile- we know you can do it!

8 Weeks Baby!

Stella is 8 weeks old already!

It is so hard for us to belive that she has already been in our lives for 8 weeks. It seems like we're still trying to figure it all out. She has already changed so much- and every day has been a blessing!

For this post, I decided to give you a day in the life of Miss Stella...

A little snuggle time with Mom to start the day.

Toes sneaking out of the blanket.

Deep in thought. I'm very serious.

Let's take a moment to enjoy the chunk rolls on my arms & tummy.

Bath time is my favorite time of the day.

More snuggle time with Mom.

Nap time on the floor.

Time to go get my brother from school. It was chilly outside, but Mom might have gone a little overboard making sure that I stayed warm.

I look forward to spending time with my brother when he comes home from school.

He likes spending time with me too.

Time for a little nap in my swing.

Quality time with my Dad before bed.

And tomorrow we'll do it all over again :)

This Thursday Brought To You By...

Stella's Crazy Hair!!!!!

I gave her a bath this morning and she had a tuft of hair that stayed sticking up.
I thought it would go down eventually.

It didn't.

I think it's fun!

I've tried to do the pebbles hair with a barette but her hair is too fine to hold it in place. Turns out I don't need it.

Have a great Thursday!

Halloween

Yes, I realize that Halloween was 10 days ago. I'm just now getting around to posting these pictures

When Halloween rolls around each year, I keep thinking that Cole will be too old for Trick-or-Treating, but so far we have not reached that milestone. After Cole and his pals came back from trick-or-treating we talked about whether this was their last year. I was informed by one of his pals that next year they will be in high school, so they will be too old to trick-or-treat, but they will be going to Halloween parties instead. Um- ok...

This year he revived an old costume from a musical he was in a couple of years ago. I think his inspiration came from the glasses- Jim's glasses from 3rd grade. Don't ask me why we still have them- we actually even have the lenses :). I guess Jim's pack-rat nature has come in handy because Cole has worn these glasses more than once.

Here is Stella in her Halloween sleeper. It has cute ghosts with long eyelashes. We had actually bought her a super cute dragon costume before she was born, but then when she came early she was too tiny for the costume, so we took it back, and I got her this sleeper. Turns out this was the only time she would wear the sleeper because she was a little too long for it- so she had to scrunch up her legs a little bit.

We didn't hand out candy at our house- we rarely get more than a dozen trick-or-treaters, and Cole was going out with some of his buddies. They were meeting at his friend Sam's house, so we just hung out with Sam's parents and watched a football game. Much better, in my opinion, than listening to our dog freak out every time the doorbell rang. I'm a bit of a Halloween scrooge.

We enjoyed this year because Cole went with his pals, and Stella was too young so we didn't have to brave the neighborhoods. That was nice, but it's probably our last year of freedom for many years since Stella will be old enough to go out next year.

Here is Cole's Halloween take.

Hand out treats have changed since I was a trick-or-treater.
Cole ended up with
several packages of pretzels
a few full size candy bars
some scarrots (baby carrots in a package decorated for Halloween)
travel size toothpaste
a prayer card from the convent near his friend Sam's house
several strings of party beads (think Mardi Gras beads)

We're still not sure what he had to do to get the beads....
